Thriving small towns are the foundation of a well-functioning local, state, and national economy.
Community is at the heart of everything I stand for.
Rural towns are dynamic microcosms of our larger world. Healthy and thriving communities are the foundation of our individual and collective well-being: we celebrate together, we mourn together, and we stand together against injustice and disenfranchisement.
In our small communities, we lift each other up and occasionally argue amongst ourselves. But when it counts, we are there for one another. It is here that we come together at town meetings to hear the perspective of others in our community, expand our own worldview, and then seek out local solutions to these issues, together. It is here, in our small communities, that we see firsthand the impact of the economy, education, environment, healthcare, and social & racial equity on our families, our friends, and our neighbors; here is where I stand on these critical issues:
“Build an equitable, sustainable economy that supports all Vermonters.” As your representative, I will act to:
Stabilize our local economy.
Take action to increase affordable housing.
Propose legislation to build an accessible system of high-quality, childcare that is affordable and reliable.
Shape progressive tax reform to reduce property tax rates.
Offer support for Vermont’s small businesses and family-run farms.
Address income inequality through advocating for fair wages and equitable pay.
Help fund and fill green energy, agriculture, education, and healthcare jobs, including protecting public employee pensions.
Advocate for workers’ rights, including safe working conditions and paid sick leave.
Work to increase access to reliable broadband and cell service, to make Vermont competitive in our digital-age economy.
“Supporting our youth is supporting Vermont’s future.”
I will enshrine the right to quality education from early childhood to higher education by:
Creating safe schools so that our children and grandchildren will have a future
Working to ensure basic needs are met via affordable housing, food, healthcare, and accessible social systems that meet the mental and emotional health needs of students today.
Championing support for early childhood education, universal pre-K, and school after-care.
Increasing access to alternative education such as dual enrollment, vocational training, and work-study programs that emphasize workforce training and guide students into well-paying career paths in industries such as green energy, technology, early childhood development, construction, education, and healthcare.
Providing Vermont high school graduates with affordable options for continuing their education in-state, including improving public funding for community colleges.
Discussing current education challenges with educators and providing them with the funding and resources they need.
Bringing parents into the conversation about how to best support their children.
Helping our small, rural towns impacted by school consolidations under Act 46, to maintain the autonomy of their local schools (should they choose to) while striving for equitable school funding.
Reducing the property tax burden by reforming how we pay for education statewide, moving to a system that includes pupil weighting and income-based school taxes.
“Prioritize protecting Vermont’s natural resources to help address the climate emergency.”
I will work to:
Combat climate change through preservation and renewal of Vermont’s fragile ecosystems.
Enact protections for our natural resources to protect the biodiversity of our forests, agricultural lands, and waterways while supporting farmers and foresters who use sustainable practices such as regenerative agriculture.
Prioritize low-impact development practices.
Work to pass a fiscally responsible carbon reduction bill that creates meaningful changes without disproportionately affecting low-income Vermonters.
Enact policy initiatives to create a green economy and a renewable energy infrastructure, while ensuring that small towns can create local solutions that empower their communities and offer protections to vulnerable populations.
Strategize ways to offset and adapt to the local effects of the changing climate while working to lower our global carbon footprint by providing incentives for small, but impactful actions such as weatherization to lower our dependence on fossil fuels.
Support public transportation investments.
"Establish publicly-financed health care and access to paid family and medical leave for all working Vermonters.” Through public engagement and transparent government regulation, we can create a Universal Healthcare system that will benefit not just individuals, but families, employers, communities, and our state and local economy. My priorities are to:
Protect and expand local access to women’s healthcare and reproductive services.
Provide expanded access to nutritious food for our at-risk youth and homebound seniors.
Expand locally accessible, high-quality mental health services.
Support common-sense gun safety reforms and domestic violence prevention.
Tackle the opioid crisis using a comprehensive prevention and treatment strategy, including harm reduction, and expanded access to addiction healthcare services.
Social & Racial Equity
I am committed to doing the work to overcome my own implicit biases and racist behaviors, so I am able to be the best anti-racist ally I can be and work in the legislature to dismantle systemic racism and promote racial and social justice in Vermont.
I will strive to be a representative of ALL of our diverse communities to intentionally make space for the voices of those historically underrepresented including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, new Americans, and migrant workers.
I will advocate for inclusion, equity, equal opportunity, and racial justice by first listening to the voices of those who often haven’t had a seat at the table, then advancing comprehensive policies to address those issues, including gaps in education, employment/wages, and housing, and codifying civil and reproductive rights.
I will equally fight to enshrine equal civil-rights protections and support for LGBTQIA+, especially policies in support of at-risk youth and codifying marriage protections.
I look forward to working with the Racial Equity Advisory Panel and Social Equity Caucus and am encouraged and excited by the many women of color running for house and senate this campaign season.
